Health classes explained

The four main underwriting tiers, what they are, and what affects which one you qualify for.

Carriers use rate classes to price term life. Names differ slightly between companies, but the structure is the same: Preferred Plus (sometimes Super Preferred), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, then higher ratings for unusual risk. Tobacco users get their own rate-class ladder, and all costs more.

What underwriters look at

Weight and height, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, whether heart disease or cancer runs in your family before age 60, your driving record, medicines you take, your job and hobbies, and any tobacco or nicotine use. The top class wants nearly perfect results everywhere; Preferred is more flexible; Standard Plus and Standard accept managed conditions like high blood pressure on medication.

How to use the quote tool

The health question on the quote tool asks you to rate yourself: Excellent typically gets Preferred Plus pricing, Very good gets Preferred, Good gets Standard Plus, and Average gets Standard. Quotes use that class; the carrier's underwriting may confirm it or adjust it. Uncertain? Quote yourself in two different classes and compare. Don't pick rosily—it will not improve your final rate, only make the quote less realistic.

Susman Insurance Agency can show you which carriers are more lenient with certain health conditions—that often matters more than the published rate.
